Gli inizi e gli anni alla VolkerWessels (2021-2022)
Roel inizia a mettersi in luce a livello giovanile vincendo una tappa alla Oberösterreich Juniorenrundfahrt in Austria nel 2019. Nel biennio 2021-2022 gareggia per la formazione Continental olandese VolkerWessels Cycling Team. Nel 2022 disputa un’ottima stagione nel calendario nazionale ed europeo vincendo l’Omloop der Kempen, l’Omloop van de Braakman e l’Omloop van Valkenswaard, e conquistando inoltre la classifica giovani all’Olympia’s Tour –

Il salto nell’orbita Intermarché e i Grandi Giri (2023-2025)
Le ottime prestazioni del ciclista neerlandese attirano l’attenzione della struttura belga Intermarché, che nel 2023 lo ingaggia inserendolo nel proprio vivaio Under-23, la Circus-ReUz-Technord. Durante la stagione conquista vittorie importanti come la Brussel-Opwijk e una tappa al Tour de Bretagne (un tempo nota come Ruban Granitier Breton), arrivando anche a disputare i campionati mondiali di Glasgow tra gli Under-23.

Nel 2024 viene ufficialmente promosso in prima squadra, facendo il suo debutto nel circuito maggiore UCI World Tour con i colori della Intermarche – Wanty. Si ritaglia subito un importante ruolo di passista sempre al servizio della squadra, e a maggio prende parte al suo primo Grande Giro, portando a termine il Giro d’Italia al 104º posto finale. Nel 2025 prende confidenza con le durissime classiche del pavé (portando a termine la Parigi – Roubaix) e fa il suo grande esordio al Tour de France, impiegato come prezioso gregario nelle tappe di pianura per il capitano Biniam Girmay, ricordato per essere il primo africano ad aver vinto una grande classica World Tour, la Gand – Wewelgem del 2022.

Il progetto Lotto-Intermarché (2026)
In seguito alla storica fusione manageriale tra le strutture belghe della Lotto e della Intermarché avvenuta al termine del 2025, Van Sintmaartensdijk fa parte dell’organico che transita nel nuovo ambizioso team Lotto – Intermarchè a partire dalla stagione 2026.

Roel Van Sintmaartensdijlk ha avuto una transizione molto fluida dal settore giovanile al professionismo, dimostrando una grande capacità di integrazione in un ambiente internazionale e ha già dimostrato qualità da passista all rounder, in grado di ritagliarsi un ruolo importante sia nelle classiche del Nord sia di supporto agli sprinter della squadra, oltre a rappresentare una riprova del fatto che nel ciclismo attuale i talenti emergono più rapidamente e di conseguenza approdano al professionismo in maniera più rapida di quanto avvenisse in passato.

Meetings at the Vuelta: Roel Van Sintmaartensdijk

Roel Van Sintmaartensdijk, born on May 8, 2001, in Zuidland (southwestern Netherlands), rides for the World Tour team Intermarché.

Career

Early days and years with VolkerWessels (2021–2022)

Roel first made a name for himself at the junior level by winning a stage at the Oberösterreich Juniorenrundfahrt in Austria in 2019. From 2021 to 2022, he raced for the Dutch Continental squad, VolkerWessels Cycling Team. He enjoyed an excellent 2022 season on the national and European circuits, winning the Omloop der Kempen, Omloop van de Braakman, and Omloop van Valkenswaard, while also securing the young rider classification at the Olympia’s Tour.

Moving into the Intermarché fold and Grand Tours (2023–2025)

The Dutch cyclist’s strong performances caught the eye of the Belgian Intermarché organization, which signed him in 2023 to its Under-23 development team, Circus-ReUz-Technord. During that season, he claimed significant victories—including Brussel-Opwijk and a stage at the Tour de Bretagne (formerly known as the Ruban Granitier Breton)—and competed in the Under-23 World Championships in Glasgow.

In 2024, he was officially promoted to the main squad, making his debut on the top-tier UCI World Tour circuit with Intermarché-Wanty. He quickly carved out a key role as a rouleur dedicated to the team’s cause; in May, he took part in his first Grand Tour, completing the Giro d’Italia in 104th place overall. In 2025, he gained experience in the grueling cobblestone Classics (completing Paris-Roubaix) and made his major debut at the Tour de France, serving as a valuable domestique on flat stages for team leader Biniam Girmay—noted for being the first African to win a major World Tour Classic, Gent-Wevelgem in 2022.

The Lotto-Intermarché Project (2026)

Following the historic management merger between the Belgian Lotto and Intermarché operations at the end of 2025, Van Sintmaartensdijk is part of the roster transitioning to the ambitious new Lotto-Intermarché team for the 2026 season.

Roel Van Sintmaartensdijk has made a seamless transition from the youth ranks to the professional level, demonstrating a great ability to integrate into an international environment. He has already shown the qualities of an all-round rouleur, capable of carving out a significant role in both the Northern Classics and in support of the team’s sprinters; his career also serves as proof that, in modern cycling, talent emerges—and consequently turns professional—more quickly than in the past.

At the start of the Vuelta, I was able to conduct a quick interview with the Dutch rider regarding his outlook for the Spanish race.
