Ciclismo. La “Vuelta” di Pasquale Di Mattia. Intervista a Marc Van Veen allenatore del WZC Zoetermeer

Signor Van Veen, qual è il bilancio di questo torneo finora?

«Il bilancio è che cerchiamo di venire qui per imparare. Abbiamo parecchi giocatori nuovi: alcuni giovani e altri un po’ più esperti – pur sempre sotto i trent’anni – che però hanno già maturato esperienza ai massimi livelli nei Paesi Bassi; noi cerchiamo semplicemente di crescere, crescere e imparare».

E cosa si aspetta dal Suo campionato?

“L’anno scorso eravamo nelle posizioni di vertice, tra le prime quattro, anche se le due squadre in testa erano decisamente superiori a noi. Entrambe sono state promosse, quindi quest’anno puntiamo a lottare noi stessi per il vertice”.

Qual è la situazione attuale della pallanuoto olandese? È un buon momento?

“Come Paesi Bassi – essendo una nazione piccola – ci impegniamo molto per portare la pallanuoto a un livello superiore, anche se vari fattori, come le condizioni economiche, possono rendere il compito più difficile. Tuttavia, c’è un buon numero di giovani talenti emergenti. Molti giocatori vanno all’estero – per esempio in Francia, a Marsiglia o al Nizza – per giocare lì. Cerchiamo sempre di far crescere il movimento e ci stiamo riuscendo, lentamente ma costantemente, anche se non siamo ancora arrivati ​​all’obiettivo finale”.

“I giovani sono il futuro”: questo è il motto del vostro club.

«Sì, significa proprio che i giovani rappresentano il futuro. Ci stiamo provando. Abbiamo molti giovani atleti e stiamo lavorando per far crescere il club: un tempo era una realtà più piccola, di stampo amatoriale, ma ora puntiamo a un livello superiore. Vogliamo che gli allenatori del settore giovanile acquisiscano maggiore competenza – superando la figura del semplice genitore senza esperienza di pallanuoto – per professionalizzare l’attività, offrendo formazione e creando sistemi strutturati per gestire ogni singola fase della crescita dei ragazzi. Ci stiamo riuscendo. Sarà un percorso lungo, ma ci stiamo provando. Ci crediamo davvero».

Mr Van Veen, what is the balance of this tournament until now?

“The balance is, we try to come here and learn. We have quite a few new players, young players and a few older ones, still below 30, but they have some experience at the highest level in the Netherlands and we just try to grow, grow and learn”.

And what do you expect from your league?

“So from our league, last year we were in the top of the league, like top four, where the top two teams were way better than we were.They also promoted both, so now this year we want to challenge for the top ourselves”.

What is the current moment of Dutch water polo? Is it a good moment or not?

“So we are currently the Netherlands, like as a small country, we try really hard to get water polo to a higher level but due to all kinds of economic circumstances, whatever, that can be harder. But there is quite some growing talent in the Netherlands. A lot of younger players going to foreign countries, for example France and Marseille, Olympic Nice and play there. So we are always trying to get it to rise and it’s slowly but steadily rising, but we’re not there yet”.

Youth is the future, is the motto of your club.

“Yes, that means youth the future indeed. Yeah, and we try. We do have a lot of youth players and we’re now building within this club which used to be like a smaller recreational club, we’re now trying to build it to a level where all youth trainers can become more expertise, like just not parents without any water polo experience, but professionalise it, give them trainings and make whole systems in how to approach every single stage of the youth. We’re getting there. It’s going to be a bit of a long road, but we’re trying it. We’re going for it”.
