Gianni Meersman is a former Belgian cyclist, a professional from 2007 to 2016, and currently the Sports Director of Team Alpecin Premier Tech. Your reporter interviewed him during the Giro d’Italia. 1) What do you expect from the Giro as stages and as ranking?
“We came to the Giro with ambitions for stage results. Unfortunately we lost Kaden Groves after his crash in the opening stage, which was a setback for the team. At the same time, this also creates opportunities for other riders. Jensen Plowright already showed his speed with fourth place in Naples, so on the sprint stages we will continue to back him and look for opportunities with him. Besides that, we also want to race aggressively and target breakaways and selective stages.”

2) Which Giro stages do your team pay most attention to?
“Of course we pay a lot of attention to the sprint stages now with Jensen, but also to the more open and unpredictable stages that can suit attackers or versatile riders. In a Grand Tour, opportunities can appear every day, especially in the final week when the race becomes harder and more chaotic.”

3) How important is having a development team in cycling today?
“It is extremely important. Modern cycling evolves very quickly and young riders need guidance, structure and time to grow. A development team allows talents to adapt step by step to the professional level and also helps create a clear identity and philosophy within the organisation.”

1) Cosa si aspetta dal Giro in termini di tappe e di classifica?

“Siamo arrivati ​​al Giro con ambizioni di risultati nelle tappe. Purtroppo abbiamo perso Kaden Groves a causa della caduta nella tappa inaugurale, il che è stato un duro colpo per la squadra. Allo stesso tempo, questo crea anche opportunità per altri corridori. In un Grande Giro, le opportunità possono presentarsi ogni giorno, soprattutto nell’ultima settimana quando la corsa diventa più dura e caotica.”

3) Quanto è importante avere una squadra di sviluppo nel ciclismo di oggi?

“È estremamente importante. Il ciclismo moderno si evolve molto rapidamente e i giovani corridori hanno bisogno di guida, struttura e tempo per crescere. Un team di sviluppo permette ai talenti di adattarsi gradualmente al livello professionistico e contribuisce anche a creare un’identità e una filosofia chiare all’interno dell’organizzazione.”
